Some BJJ clubs host grading days but you really earn your belts and stripes based on your ability to absorb and apply the techniques you have picked up in class.  Dedicated mat time is essential for faster learning and it is more likely that you will achieve a Black Belt quicker if you dedicate more time to BJJ.

First Belt – White, 2nd Blue, 3rd Purple, 4th Brown, 5th Black

What are stripes?

on the end of one side of your Belt you will notice a black strip of fabric. As you move up the ladder and demonstrate your ability, particularly when sparing, you will be given stripes to go onto your black strip. This shows to others your ability and how far away you are from your next belt.  You need 4 stripes until you get your next belt however, sometimes students will be awarded more than one if deserved.
