What is BJJ

Brazilian Jiu jitsu Basingstoke gives you BJJ classes in Basingstoke & Winchester, Hampshire, UK. Brazilian Jiu jitsu (abbreviated and known as BJJ) is a martial art system of ground fighting using throws, sweeps and submissions to control an opponent and finish a fight. BJJ techniques involve correct weight distribution, positioning and leverage, so no matter how large your opponent is, you’ll be able to finish a fight with chokes joint locks and compressions. Brazilian Jiu jitsu can also be used as a grappling sport and is a favoured system for use in grappling tournaments.

When learning BJJ in Basingstoke and Winchester classes you will drill many hours of technique which will play a major role in training and show, especially when sparing.  Jiu jitsu progression is dependent on how well you can absorb and adapt to grappling. Because there is no traditional grading structure for Brazilian Jiu jitsu Basingstoke and the majority of other Brazilian Jiu jitsu clubs, dedicated mat time is essential to earning stripes and belts. It is here BJJ allows you to progress based on your ability rather than set grading days.

History

In 1915 Esai Maeda Koma, a Japanese Jiu jitsu master, traveled to Brazil and met a man named Gastao Gracie. Gastao, the father of eight children, became a Jiu jitsu enthusiast through Koma’s teachings and brought his oldest son, Carlos, to learn from the Japanese master. Carlos started to share his knowledge and adapted the art with his brother Helio, making techniques to suit the naturally weaker in the family. Using these new techniques, smaller and weaker practitioners gained the capability to defend themselves and even defeat much larger opponents. The Gracie’s proved the efficiency of  Gracie Jiu-jitsu, challenging the best martial artists and beating opponents who were physically stronger and became Brazilian national heroes.

Now, they have global recognition and are known for introducing the importance of ground fighting to the world.  This was proven in the early beginnings of the UFC Ultimate Fighting Championships, where Helios son ‘Royce’ won UFC 1, UFC 2, UFC 4, and really introduced Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to the world. Now a days if you see any MMA fighter, Jiu-jitsu is an essential part of their training and is highly respected in the Martial Arts world.

So if your’re a fan of Martial Arts or the UFC, or have never done anything like this before, allow yourself the chance to learn BJJ that’s here in Basingstoke, Alton and Winchester with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu team Basingstoke.
